Philippe Chatel, whose real name is Philippe de Chateleux de Villeneuve-Bergemont de Duras (!), was a French singer-songwriter and son of François Chatel, television director to whom we will notably owe the first numbers of the famous broadcast by Bernard Pivot Apostrophes.
His first notable success was in 1977 with the title "J’t’aime bien Lili", taken from his album "Analyse". Followed a year later in 1978 by the track "Mister Hyde" from the album "Sentiments".
But it was especially the year 1979 that saw him explode on the international scene thanks to the musical Emilie Jolie. Musical comedy he composed and which brings together the best of the singers of the time to record the various titles. For the original version, we find Henri Salvador, Robert Charlebois, Julien Clerc, Sylvie Vartan, Françoise Hardy, among others.
A new version will be released in 1997 which will bring together names like Jacques Dutronc, Michel Fuguain, Johnny Hallayday, Mauranne, Axelle Red, Zazie, Alain Chamfort, among others.
The 1980s will prove to be much more complicated to manage and the success will be meager. Except in 1981 with the title "Tout quitter mais tout emporter" from the album "Maquillages". And to a lesser extent "Yin yang" from the album of the same name in 1982.
He will attempt to repeat the feat the following year in 1983 with a new musical tale called "Les aventures de Tom-Tom-Tommy". Unfortunately without success.
Two other albums will be released later but with success, once again, very limited.
One of the most gifted singer of his generation, he will leave us permanently on February 19, 2021 at the age of 72 following a cardiac arrest.
To discover or rediscover.

Clips :
1970 ... fairly confidential beginnings but which show obvious potential from the outset. We'll just have to give time to time so that the young singer can climb the stages one after the other
1971 ... the writing quality is confirmed with this second title. The young singer does not really lack much to start talking to the stars ...
1977 ... then THIS title comes ! The title that will change everything and explode its notoriety. A very simple title on the orchestration side but with formidable efficiency. HU-GE !
1977 ... in the same vein. Even if this title will not have the same level of success as its predecessor, it confirms all the good that we can think of the artist
1978 ... a style which varies little and mainly based on the guitar. What works for the 1970s will not work for the 1980s, so he will have to evolve quickly ...
1979 ... the end of the 1970s which ended in style with this new success. The singer is a sure bet of the moment and it's gone to last !
1979 ... a BIG year 1979 with a plethora of big caliber titles. An inspiration among the best of the moment which positions him ideally for the following events...
1979 ... which will forever remain his Masterpiece. A musical which will remain as one of the greatest successes in this field and in which he has proven his talent far above the norm. MAS-TER-FUL !
1980 ... it's nice, it's playful, light and airy but the singer does not take at all the extent of the delay he has taken on the competition. It is becoming more than urgent to get up to date ...
1981 ... awareness has finally taken place and success is back. Unfortunately, not sure that this is enough to put him back in the race for a long time ...
1982 ... obvious goodwill is unfortunately not always enough. But the efforts to get back into the race are real and everything is now possible again...
1982 ... efforts that pay off in any case. The success fluctuates according to the titles but it is well and truly back. The essential is therefore preserved ...
1982 ... he tries to repeat Emilie Jolie's feat. But who says the 80s means different times and other customs. Nice try but unfortunately lost bet ...
1984 ... after an empty year 1983, we find him as if we had left him at the end of the 1970s. Strategic error that he will pay a heavy price with a gradual disappearance of radars ...
1984...a title that won't have been talked about much but that it would have been a shame to hide. He deserved a little highlighting...
1986 ... the sound is much more trendy but its past choices have unfortunately ended up marginalizing him. Frankly shame ...
1987 ... he hangs on and resists somehow. A great resistance that we can only salute but which will not be enough to put him back afloat in the middle of the 1980s when things are accelerating more and more ...
1991 ... undoubtedly, a pretty, simple ballad with formidable efficiency. But we are in the 90s and there, the gap with the rest of the world has become abysmal ...
1992 ... and yet, not much would have been enough for him to be able to reverse the course of time. But that had to be done the previous decade ...
1997 ... this time, it's well and truly the end. The adventure was beautiful, with several exceptional titles and that, not everyone can say the same !
